South Sudan

Overview

In January 2011, the people of South Sudan voted to secede from the north. As a result, thousands of southerners living in north Sudan have been migrating to the south. As more refugees return to South Sudan, the problem of homeless children in the town of Wau is escalating.

Those returning have found a devastated land with few roads, hospitals, schools or jobs. The overwhelming poverty leaves many parents unable to provide for their children. So, the children turn to the streets to survive. Sadly, hundreds of children are dying from preventable diseases every day.

Facts

  • South Sudan has the highest infant mortality rate in the world with one in four children dying before their fifth birthday.
  • And thousands of children trying to survive on the streets are at constant risk from abuse, disease, injury from gangs, and being forced into prostitution.

Helping the Children

Kids Alive's focus is on the entire child. Just like Jesus - we are concerned about the empty tummies of children as much as their empty hearts.  We focus on meeting the physical, emotional, AND spiritual needs of each child through Christ-centered care, education, and ministry. Christian caregivers in our Children's Homes, Care Centers and Schools nurture and encourage these children to become faithful followers of Jesus that give hope to their community.

Kids Alive International currently runs a Children’s Home for almost 20 vulnerable children in Wau. With such a great need in this area, there are plans to grow this critical ministry as soon as we are able.

Good Shepherd Home

As more refugees return to their homes in southern Sudan, the problem of homeless children in Wau becomes greater. The returnees find a devastated land without good roads, hospitals, schools or jobs. This poverty leaves many parents unable to provide for their children, leaving them to wander the streets. This ministry in southern Sudan consists of a Care Center serving about forty street children and a Children’s Home for the most vulnerable children. With such a need in this area, there are plans to grow this critical ministry.

Sudan Staff

Kids Alive Staff in Sudan have been called by God to serve the children in some of the harshest conditions in the world. Due to the persecution of faith-based aid organizations their identities need to be protected. Please keep them in your prayers and consider financially supporting their work with the orphans.
