India

In India around 47 percent of all children under age three are underweight, and at least 16 percent show signs of severe malnutrition. Many children die from preventable diseases such as measles and tetanus. More than 122 million households are without toilets, leading to diarrhea as the second major cause of death among children due to poor sanitation and unsafe drinking water.

India has an estimated 220,000 children infected by HIV/AIDS, with an estimated 55,000 to 60,000 children born every year to mothers who are HIV-positive.

Twenty percent of children aged 6 to 14 do not have access to education, while differences in caste, class and gender mean children are denied equal opportunities. This contributes to India having the largest number of child laborers under the age of 14 in the world, with an estimated 12.6 million children engaged in hazardous occupations.

In early 2006 Kids Alive affiliated with the Agape Children’s Home and School in Moreh, Manipur, in northeast India. Moreh is close to the border with Burma, in an unstable area where tribal wars have caused hardship and bloodshed for many years. Children have suffered most from this violence, and there are hundreds of orphans whose parents have died at the hands of various insurgent groups.

Kids Alive started caring for twenty orphans at the Agape Home in Moreh, but this work has grown so we now care for over sixty children in our school and over thirty in our children’s home. All these children receive good food, education, medical care, school uniforms, clothes and occasional treats. Each year the local church assists the home in running a week-long bible camp that reaches out to over 150 children with fun, games, food, education and the opportunity to learn about Jesus.

National Staff in India have been called by God to serve the children in some of the harshest conditions in the world. Due to the persecution of faith-based aid organizations their identities need to be protected. Please keep them in your prayers and consider financially supporting their work with the orphans.
