Myanmar (Burma)

Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a nation located in the Indian Ocean between India and China. A depressed economy, repressive military rule and the dominance of Buddhism make working in this country not only difficult, but sometimes dangerous.

In 2008 a cyclone struck southern Myanmar, literally washing away the rice fields that feed the population. The government of Myanmar refused most of the foreign aid that was offered, but Kids Alive had staff in place to receive much needed shipments and to deliver food, water, blankets, and medical care to devastated villages where the people had lost everything.

The aftermath of that disaster brought skyrocketing food prices (with one bag of rice often costing more than an entire month’s average wages), and rampant outbreaks of contagious diseases in a country with little health care and no health provisions for the poor.

Kids Alive began partnering with national ministries in Myanmar in 1998 to help care for some of the “poorest of the poor” children of the country. Today Kids Alive operates twenty homes and eighteen schools and care centers across the country, with over two thousand orphaned, abandoned and at-risk children relying on us for loving homes, education and medical care.

Kids Alive National Staff in Myanmar have been called by God to serve the children in some of the harshest conditions in the world. Due to the persecution of faith-based aid organizations their identities need to be protected. Please keep them in your prayers and consider financially supporting their work with the orphans.
