Bethany Bokiji School
Ethiopia
In 2002 the local church in Bokiji rented a two-room, mud building with the goal of loving and educating over 200 extremely poor children. Despite the church's efforts, the school did not have the resources or proper facilities to succeed.
Kids Alive was impressed with the school’s commitment and desire to break the cycle of poverty and so we partnered with the school in 2006. Today the school is in a newly rented building with six classrooms, running water, electricity and enough space for a playground. We now employ eight local staff, and we are able to provide each child with a hot meal at lunch time. The Ethiopian government has given Kids Alive 10,000 square meters of land free of charge on which to build a new school. Eventually the school will have eight classrooms, a library, dining room, kitchen, toilets and a staff room. It is our intention for the children in the town of Bokiji to receive the best possible education, to equip them with skills for a brighter future.
