Sudan Update

Sudan needThe situation in North Sudan is increasingly tense, particularly among the southerners living in Khartoum and the surrounding districts. The Khartoum government has, as yet, made no formal statements regarding what will happen to these people once the separation of North and South takes place on July 9th.

There are fears that southerners will be forcibly returned to the South, or will lose their right to citizenship in the North. Many people have already left Khartoum for their hometowns in the South.

There have recently been some extremely serious clashes between troops from the North and those from the South, particularly in the oil-rich region of Abyei.

Kids Alive is closely monitoring the situation and how it impacts our ministry locations in Sudan. Our desire is to continue working with children in crisis in North Sudan for as long as there is a need and while we are permitted to be there.

The children in the North still urgently need our help – and would find themselves back living on the streets if Kids Alive were forced to close the doors of our Children’s Homes. We do not want to see this happen!

Please continue to pray for:

  • Kids Alive’s Children’s Homes and Care Centers in North Sudan and the children in our care
  • The safety of the children and their families that are returning to the South
  • Our field leadership and staff, as they manage a difficult situation and uncertain future
  • Our ministry in South Sudan as we prepare to expand and help more children
  • For peace in Sudan over the coming weeks as the date for the separation quickly approaches
