FAMILY - Where you belong
The organization of a Kids Alive® International Children's Home is by Family Units rather than institutional dormitories. Each Haiti Family Unit currently occupies a single family house rented in Cap Haitien, Haiti. One of the major benefits of the Family Unit is that graduates leave the Home tending to be more responsible and have a better idea of what a family should be. Those raised in a dormitory seem to expect others to make decisions for them. They have little idea of how to live in a family. Spiritual results are more likely to occur in a family setting. The houseparents are present to follow up on the children and are available to disciple each child on a day-to-day basis. The closeness of the Family Unit is a good climate for character training and spiritual growth. The following are some characteristics of Haiti Family Units:
- Up to twelve
children are in a family grouping with a Haitian couple
- The houseparents are chosen by the Haitian National Board based on their Christian character and their demonstrated ability as strong role models for children.
- The housing units each consist of a boys' bedroom and a girls' bedroom, a large living/study area, a kitchen and dining area, and a bedroom for the houseparents.
- The children enjoy daily routines, with scheduled school time, homework time, play time, chores, Bible study and prayer.
- Three meals are provided for the children daily, as well as special food for birthday celebrations and other
occasions.
- Children are allotted personal items, such as clothing, toys and school
materials.
