John
and Christine Chitumbo are the house parents for the Lilato Two Children's Home in Mongu, Zambia. (Gertrude Chitumbo, John's wife, partnered with him in this
ministry until she passed away in 2004.)
Orphans themselves,
John and Gertrude started the home out of a deep love and concern
for the orphaned and abandoned children in this area.
They have 5 children: Joe, Alex, Geofry, Mercy, and Joseph, and also
provide for Gertrude's niece and nephew: Peggy and Chisenga. They all
attend the Mongu
Evangelical Church.
John's pastoral
service and current chaplain position at the rural hospital (counseling
the sick and dying) has given him the knowledge and experience necessary
to care for these needy children and their families.
Believing in the
ministry and work of Kids Alive International in Zambia, John
shares on behalf of his team, "(We) know
that it is not easy to keep and raise children, especially in a large
number. However, we have a strong conviction that God delights in the
ministry of looking after orphans (James
1:27). In the Old Testament
book of Esther, we also see how God used Queen Esther, an orphan herself,
to save the entire community of Jews! From this, we see how important it
is to raise orphans in a Godly way. We are equally sure that among the
many orphans we raise, some will grow up to become pastors, evangelists,
church leaders and missionaries who will one day stand in the gap and
intercede for the world so that many will be saved! Our daily cry to the
Lord is, "Please God, help us raise these children that You have given us
in the way of knowing our Lord Jesus."
