Nothing is more heartbreaking than when a single mom, grandmother or other relative comes to Kids Alive because she can’t feed her children/grandchildren, and tearfully asks if we can take them in and care for them. In Africa, the HIV/AIDS pandemic often means both parents are dead, and it left to a grandmother to care for her grandchildren. Without help, these children can become malnourished and diseased. Many are forced to live on the streets in constant danger of being victimized or having to turn to prostitution or other criminal behavior, just to survive. The Families Together initiative allows Kids Alive to reach out and help many more starving children…right in their own home! We provide support to a poor single parent, grandparent or other relative, helping them take care of their child or grandchild, by caring for the needs of the child and family. |

This initiative will have a multi-faceted approach in order to holistically meet the needs of the selected children. Everyone benefits from Families Together:
- The children become healthy and have a better future
- The mother, grandmother or other relative receives training to help make life better for the entire family;
- The family unit is kept together and encouraged
- Extended families and communities witness Christian compassion
- Everyone grows in their relationship with God and He is honored.
This initiative will also target the child-headed families by providing for their basic needs so that the oldest brothers and sisters can return to school instead of having to work odd jobs in order to feed their younger siblings. We see the commitment to these children and families as long-term, enabling them to break the cycle of poverty for future generations.
