Ministry Locations Kids Alive International began its work in Sudan in January 2006 in response to the severe problems faced by children in Sudan, many of which are a result of the civil war that has ravaged the country in recent years. In Khartoum, where Kids Alive has established three programs, there are a huge number of street children, many of them refugees who have fled from the fighting in the west and south of the country. The social problems that affect these children include glue sniffing, drugs, sexual abuse and pregnancies in girls as young as 9 and 10 years of age. Many street children die because of a lack of access to clean water and medical treatment. Even though there are a number of refugee camps in desert areas on the outskirts of Khartoum, conditions in these camps are extremely limited, with no electricity and limited access to water. The number of orphans in Sudan is estimated at almost 10 per cent of all children. Many children were orphaned during the war and are now living on the streets or in camps. Hospital and medical facilities are often not accessible because of the cost. In the south, one in four children dies before their fifth birthday. HIV / AIDS is a growing problem. Education is not free in Sudan. Instead, as many as 13 per cent of all children are sent out to work as child laborers. There is also a significant number of child soldiers in Sudan. Children as young as twelve years have been forced to fight in the civil war. Kids Alive Sudan Projects are:
