LOCATION The Chikondi Children’s Home & Preschool (Chikondi means love) is located in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. Zambia is a land-locked country in southern Africa, just south of Congo and north of Zimbabwe. HISTORY The Kids Alive Zambia project began in 1999 with a visit to Zambia by members of the Canadian Board. We were aware of the devastating impact of the AIDS crisis on the children of the country. A Zambian board of directors was formed in 2000. In 2001 the Children’s Home and Preschool were opened. FACILITIES Due to the high cost of renting the current house, we will be looking for a new building in 2003. On a brighter note, a five-acre parcel of land has been purchased with the future goal of establishing a permanent location for the Chikondi Children’s Home and Preschool and developing additional Homes around it.
PROGRAM Houseparents, Jimmy and Ivy Kongwa provide loving care for the children. In addition to a safe place to live and nutritious meals, the children receive an education, medical attention, and Christian discipleship. For children ages four and younger, a preschool is provided, while the older children are now attending grades 1 through 4 in the local primary school.
