It is with a heart full of grief that I write to you all this morning asking for your very specific and urgent prayers. We received word last night that one of our students, Juan Carlos, drowned in the river here in Monte Plata yesterday. Juan Carlos was in 2nd grade here and has two brothers in 1st grade and one sister in 5th grade. This unexpected tragedy is hard for our little town to swallow and is especially difficult for his family and for all those involved in our ministry here at school.

Please pray for the family as they process the loss of their son and brother.

Please pray for our students, especially the 2nd grade class (4 of our children from Casa Monte Plata were in 2nd grade with Juan Carlos this year).

Please pray for our teachers and staff within the ministry.

Please pray for my 3 interns who are processing way more than they ever expected to process during their summer here.

Please pray that God gives me the wisdom needed to navigate the mourning process for the death of a child in my second culture and second language.

Please pray that God gives us words that bring comfort, peace, and healing.

Please pray that the physical needs of this extremely impoverished family would be met in this time.

Please pray that God continues to be glorified through this tragedy as His people comfort and help one another.

I feel like these verses from 1 Corinthians perfectly exemplify how we are feeling right now as ministers of God’s comfort and grace in this difficult time. We have no lofty words nor wisdom. All we know is Jesus. We are scared and sad, but we are praying that God’s power would be shown throughout this situation and that Juan Carlos’s family and friends would turn to Jesus as the author of peace.

And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. — 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

In Christ,

Kristin Barber

On behalf of the team who visit Monte Plata each summer from Northern Ireland (and will be there again in a few weeks' time), I would like to send our deepest condolences at this really difficult time. It is devastating news to hear of this little boy's death, especially in a town that is so close to our hearts. We will be thinking of you all and praying for you and Juan Carlos' family as you all come to terms with such a sad loss.

Lots of love and God Bless,
