“My life before I came to Kids Alive was miserable.”
Benson’s early memories are full of heartache and pain. He has vivid recollections of his mother selling beer at a market stall – and of himself drinking beer and smoking cigarettes by the time he was just six years of age. He remembers his mother becoming sick and how he, even at such a tender age, became her caregiver. “Life became so difficult now that I didn’t have anyone to take care of me. My mum was so sick. This season was so terrible. I had to drop out of school to care for my mum. I had to do a job here and there to care for my family. I remember particularly that I would fetch water for people, sell the water and get some food to feed my family.”
Before long, Benson’s mother died. “It was so sad…it happened when I was really young and I needed my mum by my side.” Following his mother’s death, Benson had no one to look after him. He stayed for a time with an uncle, but was mistreated by him and had no opportunity to go to school, instead being forced into child labor.
Thankfully, rescue was not far away – and suddenly Benson had a fresh sense of optimism. “God just opened a way for me to come to Kids Alive. My goodness, life just changed. I found somewhere I was loved, I found people who cared for me. I felt like I was now home with friends and family and people who loved me. Kids Alive has given me a sense of belonging, vision, and hope.
“Kids Alive has really transformed my life – it taught me the Word of God and gave me spiritual support, and helped me to go to school and university, and helped make my dreams become reality. Kids Alive has made me who I am today. If it were not for Kids Alive, I would be a drunkard somewhere – or I would be dead.”
Inspired by the love that he has received at Kids Alive – and by his faith in Jesus Christ – Benson is now committed to making a difference in the lives of other orphans and vulnerable children in Kenya: “Now I am working with Kids Alive, serving as a social worker in Nyamarambe. I enjoy serving these kids. They give me a lot of happiness and joy. They remind me of so many of the things that happened in my life. I need to be there for them, care for them, and give them the spiritual support that they need.”
Finally, Benson is thankful for those people around the world who have supported him through the years – and he has no doubt of the value of child sponsorship. “By sponsoring a child, you can really change a life. The sponsors who sponsored me back then really transformed my life. Putting your money towards sponsoring a child can really help that child fulfill their dreams.”
