At Eva Russell School, we support strengthening students’ families via the school’s Psychology and Guidance Department. Made up of a clinical psychologist and a social worker, these two staff members are in charge of monitoring and managing any psychological and emotional situations among our students and their families.

Eva Russell School counselor, Domingo, recounts his most recent efforts to strengthen families:

We work with our students through home visits and WhatsApp telephone or video calls. More recently, we have returned to some in-person counseling which is helpful.

We guide children and their families through the problems they present to us and make recommendations on handling and overcome their challenges.

One of the cases that we worked on during the pandemic involved the mother of one of our 5th graders. The mother was battling depression due to family and economic challenges.

We helped the mother with various psychotherapies and taught her a few self-regulation techniques to manage her depressive moods.

 Other recommendations included:

    • Focus on the important things and people in your life.
    • Do not listen to the negative voices.
    • Value the people around you and those who matter in your life.
    • Start a new business that generates an income to meet your needs.
    • Trust God that everything will be fine for both you and your son in the future.

We remain in contact with her, following up before any situation that is difficult for her to handle.

We are grateful for Domingo’s work and know that strengthening families is foundational to providing the best long-term help for the children we serve.
