AI Usage Policy

Purpose

At Kids Alive International (KAI), our priority is the safety, dignity, and well-being of the children and families we serve — and the trust of the donors who make our mission possible. Guided by our Safeguarding Policy, we are committed to protecting both children and donor information, while using every resource wisely. This includes the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for imagery, content, and data-related processes.

Our Guiding Principles

  1. Child Safety First
    1. We will never use AI in a way that compromises the safety, dignity, or privacy of children.
    2. All AI usage must align with KAI’s Safeguarding Policy and global best practices in child protection.
  1. Donor Privacy & Data Protection
    1. We are committed to safeguarding donor information with the same seriousness as we protect children.
    2. If AI technology is ever used to help us manage, analyze, or personalize donor engagement, it will always:
      1. Comply with strict data security protocols.
      2. Avoid exposing personally identifiable donor information to unsecured or unverified platforms.
      3. Be monitored and reviewed regularly to ensure donor privacy is upheld at the highest standard.
    3. Donor information will never be shared, sold, or used in a way that risks confidentiality.
  1. AI as a Supportive Tool
    1. AI is not a replacement for authentic stories, voices, or images from our programs.
    2. Instead, it is a supportive tool to streamline processes, reduce risk, and steward donor resources effectively so more children and families can be served.
  1. Use of AI Imagery
    1. AI-generated images may be used when they:
      1. Provide high-quality visuals that communicate connection to our mission.
      2. Reduce the need for identifiable photos of children or families in sensitive contexts.
      3. Help illustrate campaigns, concepts, or global themes while avoiding risks tied to showing real children or families in vulnerable circumstances.
    2. AI imagery will never be used to depict a specific child in our care.
  1. Authenticity in Storytelling
    1. Kids Alive country or site updates will always use authentic stories and approved, safeguarded images from that location.
    2. Donors will continue to see the genuine smiles, milestones, and moments that reflect the impact of their support.
    3. KAI will not exploit or elevate individual children as “poster children” for our brand or fundraising. Instead, we will highlight the collective impact of our programs, ensuring stories are shared with dignity, respect, and sensitivity.
  1. Transparency with Donors
    1. This policy serves as our open and honest commitment to how and when we will use AI-generated imagery and tools.
    2. Any use of AI will reflect the heart of our ministry without misrepresenting children, families, or donors.
    3. Our goal is to build trust by ensuring AI is always used in alignment with our safeguarding standards and values.
  1. Continuous Review & Growth
    1. As technology evolves, KAI will regularly review how AI tools can be responsibly scaled.
    2. All new practices will be evaluated through the lens of safeguarding, cultural sensitivity, donor trust, and the best interests of children and families.

Why This Matters

Using AI responsibly allows us to:

  • Strengthen Safeguarding: Reduce risks tied to sharing identifiable images of children.
  • Protect Donor Trust: Ensure donor data and personal information are always safe, private, and never misused.
  • Steward Resources: Create needed media and content efficiently, allowing donor support to go further in direct ministry.
  • Enhance Communication: Provide compelling visuals and insights while honoring privacy and safeguarding standards.
  • Preserve Connection: Balance innovation with authenticity, so donors remain personally connected to the work they support.

Legal & Compliance Commitments

To ensure the responsible and transparent use of Artificial Intelligence, Kids Alive International affirms the following commitments:

  1. Compliance with Laws & Regulations
    1. All use of AI tools by KAI will comply with applicable data protection and privacy regulations, ensuring the security and confidentiality of donor information across all jurisdictions in which we operate.
  1. Data Handling & Security
    1. KAI will only engage AI platforms or vendors that meet rigorous data security standards and, where necessary, enter into data processing agreements to ensure donor and child data remain fully protected.
  1. No Creation of False Identities or Misrepresentation
    1. KAI will never use AI to generate fabricated child profiles, false stories, or content that misrepresents the reality of our programs.
  1. Consent & Safeguarding Boundaries
    1. AI will not be used to alter, recreate, or manipulate identifiable images of children or families without appropriate consent consistent with KAI’s Safeguarding Policy.
  1. Limitation of Liability Statement
    1. KAI will take reasonable measures to ensure all AI tools are used responsibly and securely. However, no technology can be guaranteed to be 100% risk-free, and KAI will continually monitor and update practices to minimize risks.
  1. Policy Review & Updates
    1. This policy will be reviewed annually, or more frequently as needed, to reflect changes in technology, law, or safeguarding standards.
  1. Ethical Representation & Non-Exploitation
    1. KAI will not exploit children by presenting them as “poster children” for marketing, fundraising, or branding purposes. We commit to representing children and families in a way that preserves dignity, avoids stereotypes, and emphasizes collective impact rather than singling out individuals for promotional purposes.
