LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Two champions of UCLA gymnastics came to Little Rock with a message for every child who has ever needed protecting: someone has to fight for you.
Kids Alive International board member Noel Reemtsen and her husband, Dr. Brian Reemtsen, head of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery at Arkansas Children's Hospital, hosted an evening gathering on Oct. 17 featuring legendary coach Valorie Kondos Field and former U.S. National Team gymnast Jeanette Antolin. Brad Lenardson, Kids Alive's Chief Revenue Officer, moderated the panel, which explored accountability, healing, and the power of a loving home in a child's journey of recovery from abuse.

Coach Valorie Kondos Field led UCLA Women's Gymnastics for 29 years, guiding the program to seven NCAA National Championships and 22 Pac-12 titles. She is an inductee of the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame, was named Pac-12 Coach of the Century, and most recently received the WeCOACH Lifetime Achievement Award. Coach Val is known for a leadership philosophy built on joy, authenticity, and personal growth.
Jeanette Antolin is a former U.S. National Team gymnast and three-time NCAA national champion with UCLA. A survivor of abuse by former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar, she was among the first gymnasts to speak out publicly, sharing her story on 60 Minutes and helping bring the scandal to national attention. Today, she advocates for survivors and raises awareness about accountability, healing, and safer environments for children.
Jeanette and Coach Val spoke about why this kind of work matters. When Jeanette came forward, she had advocates in her corner: attorney John Manly, who represented survivors in their fight for accountability, and Judge Rosemarie Aquilina, who gave survivors a courtroom where their voices were heard.
“When I met with John Manly, it was scary because I had never met with a lawyer before, but it was the first time that I had someone say that he believed me. And that changed everything for me,” Jeanette shared.
The children we serve here at Kids Alive need the same thing. Many have experienced abuse, neglect, or exploitation, and too often no one has stood up for them. Through supporters like you, that changes. We are their John Manly. We are their Judge Aquilina.
The evening's most moving moment came when Jeanette's mother joined her on stage. Together, they shared how unconditional love and support at home carried Jeanette through her healing. Her mother believed her, stood by her, and made home a safe place to recover.
That picture of a healing home sits at the heart of Kids Alive's approach. Healing doesn't happen in isolation, so Kids Alive works alongside mothers, caregivers, and whole families to make sure home becomes a place of safety and restoration for every child. This generational healing breaks cycles of harm and builds a foundation that lasts.
Jeanette's son then joined his mother and grandmother on stage, completing a powerful image for everyone in the room: three generations, each one shaped by the love and support of the one before.
Kids Alive is grateful to Noel and Dr. Brian Reemtsen for hosting the evening, and to Coach Val, Jeanette, and her family for sharing their story with such courage and grace.
Justice and healing don't happen in a single moment. Jeanette had advocates who stood with her and a mother who never stopped loving her. The children we serve need the same: someone who stays in the fight for as long as it takes.
This season, we invite you to STAY. Your monthly gift provides the consistent protection, advocacy, and family support that turns a moment of rescue into a lifetime of healing. Give monthly and STAY with a child today.
Kids Alive International is a global non-profit dedicated to protecting children, strengthening families, and advocating for justice. With a presence in six countries, Kids Alive provides holistic care that addresses not only immediate needs like safety, education, and health, but also the deeper wounds of trauma and sexual abuse.
In Guatemala, the ministry operates under the name Vida Para Niños and is recognized for its leadership in trauma-informed care, restorative justice, and advocacy for children who have suffered sexual abuse or other forms of violence. Through safe homes, foster family programs, counseling, and legal accompaniment, Kids Alive ensures that children are not revictimized by the systems meant to protect them.
The organization is committed to advancing systemic change by working with courts, governments, and local partners to embed “Justice that Heals” into legal processes. This includes creating safe spaces within court systems, training judicial personnel in child-sensitive practices, and walking with families as they pursue reconciliation and restoration.
Every child deserves to be seen, heard, and treated with dignity. Kids Alive International is devoted to making that a reality, combining compassionate care with courageous advocacy to defend the most vulnerable and restore hope for future generations.
